YouTube Description Template and Complete Examples

A useful YouTube description explains what the video teaches, helps viewers find important sections, and provides the links or credits they need. Put the specific summary first, then add accurate chapters and a small number of relevant next steps. Use the free template below and replace every placeholder before publishing.

Write the description after checking the finished video. A planned demonstration, product link or chapter may have changed during editing. The description should represent what a viewer can actually watch, not the earlier production brief.

A video sits above an organized description and link section.

What belongs at the start of a YouTube description?

Use the opening lines for the subject and useful outcome. YouTube recommends a unique description for each video and prominent use of one or two main terms in the title and description. The description limit is 5,000 characters; filling the allowance is not a goal. YouTube’s video description guidance

Replace vague wording such as “another amazing tutorial” with the actual task: “Learn how to measure a room for a desk, including the chair space and door clearance.” State relevant limitations where they affect the advice. A practical description can be short if the video needs little supporting material.

How should a YouTube description be organized?

SectionIncludeCheck before publishing
SummaryThe question, answer and audience. The video actually delivers the promised answer.
Useful resourceThe checklist, product information or source a viewer needs. The destination works and its label is accurate.
ChaptersTimestamps and clear section titles. Each timestamp matches the final edit.
Credits and disclosuresContributors, permissions and relevant commercial relationships.Required wording is accurate and placed appropriately.
Related video or playlistA genuine next step for the same task.It exists and adds useful detail.
About the channelA brief, current description of the business or creator. The reusable text still applies to this video.

What are YouTube’s manual chapter requirements?

Start the first timestamp at 00:00, provide at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Channel eligibility also matters; adding timestamps does not guarantee that chapters will appear. YouTube’s chapter requirements

Name chapters after their useful content, such as “Measure chair movement,” rather than “Part two.” Play through every boundary after the final export. If an edit removes a section, revise both its chapter title and any summary that refers to it.

What does a complete YouTube description example look like?

Fictional example

Fictional video: Cedar Desk’s four-minute guide to measuring a home office. The links below are example placeholders and must be replaced with real destinations.

“Measure your room before choosing a desk. This video shows how to mark the desk footprint, test chair movement and check nearby doors.”

“Use your actual product measurements. This practical demonstration does not establish compliance with building or accessibility standards.”

“Measuring worksheet: [your verified worksheet URL]”

“00:00 What you need to measure 00:35 Mark the desk footprint 01:30 Test the chair space 02:40 Check doors and walking routes 03:20 Review your measurements”

“Next video: [your verified desk-comparison video URL], for comparing the actual dimensions of two options.”

“Created by the fictional Cedar Desk team using its own demonstration footage. No sponsorship is assumed in this example; replace this line with the facts that apply to your production.”

“Cedar Desk makes desks for small home offices. See current product details and contact information: [your verified business URL].”

How do you review descriptions without creating extra work?

Keep a small reusable footer for current channel information, but write a fresh opening for every video. Reusing the same generic summary makes different videos harder to distinguish. Check link destinations without stripping existing attribution parameters that your team intentionally uses. Do not add new tracking conventions casually while editing copy.

Read the description on a narrow screen, confirm the essential summary appears early, and test all chapter times against the video. Pair it with the YouTube thumbnail guide and plan the next production using the video script template. If you revise the video’s promise, update the title, thumbnail and description together.
